SAMA releases Screen Classic Film series


The San Antonio Museum of Art to Screen Classic Film Series

Film Series: Classics at the Movies

While the Greek and Roman galleries are closed for reinstallation, SAMA will screen a series of classic films based on Greek and Roman literature and history. Associate Curator of Western Antiquities Jessica Powers will introduce each film.

Film: Black Orpheus
Tuesday, October 30, 6:30 p.m.
Auditorium. Free for members, non-members pay $3 at door.

The myth of Orpheus, who descended to the Underworld to rescue his beloved Eurydice, is beautifully retold in the context of Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro.
Directed by Marcel Camus Brazil , 1959 Color, 107 minutes

Film: Cleopatra
Sunday, November 18, 2 p.m.
Auditorium. Free for members, non-members pay $3 at door.


This epic retelling of Cleopatra's affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony became equally famous for the off-screen romance between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz 1963, 186 minutes, plus intermission. This film is unrated.

Film: Fellini-Satyricon
Tuesday, November 27, 6:30 p.m.
Auditorium. Free for members, non-members pay $3 at the door. For mature audiences.

Federico Fellini's interpretation of the Latin novel the Satyricon follows the surreal adventures of two young men and satirizes the decadence of Imperial Rome. Directed by Federico Fellini, Italy, 1969 Color, 128 minutesThis film is rated R for mature audiences. Call 210.978.8151 for more information.
