Rio Grande Guardian reporting State Rep. Puente to retire

State Representative Robert Puente to retire
By Staff (Rio Grande Guardian) (condensed version)

San Antonio- October 17 - State Rep. Robert Puente, D-San Antonio, chair of the House Natural Resources Committee, is to retire from the Texas House, the Guardian has learned. Puente, a key lieutenant to Republican Speaker Tom Craddick for the past three sessions and leader of the Bexar County delegation in the House, is expected to announce his retirement at a news conference on Saturday.

Rumors about Puente’s retirement have been circulating in San Antonio political circles for months. There was much talk of it at a Mexican American Legislative Caucus event in Austin on Tuesday. At the beginning of this year’s legislative session Puente unsuccessfully challenged for the chairmanship of MALC.

"As much as I loved serving in the Legislature, it is time to get out of the Austin bubble," Puente told the Quorum Report, an Austin-based online political newsletter. "It's time to stand aside and let some new blood represent this district."

The Guardian will have reaction to Puente's decision later today.
