Former Hispanic Chamber leader appointed UT System Regents Chairman
Gov. Rick Perry appoints former San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Executive Board Member, Wm. Eugene “Gene” Powell, the new Chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System. Powell is the only UT Regent from San Antonio.
“During his short tenure on the UT board, Gene has focused on access and affordability, and has worked harder to create a college going culture in South Texas residents,” said Hispanic Chamber Board Chairman Eddie Aldrete. “He knows that an educated workforce not only creates opportunity for all, but also enhances all of our economic development efforts to continue bringing high-paying jobs to San Antonio.”
The Texas Senate confirmed Powell in April, 2009 as a UT Regent. He was raised in Weslaco and is a native of the Rio Grande Valley. Mr. Powell earned a Bachelor’s degree in Finance at the University of Texas at Austin and later earned a Master’s degree in Finance from U.T. Austin.
Mr. Powell is a leading San Antonio real estate developer and has produced exceptional projects as Lincoln Heights, The Alamo Quarry Market, Shavano Park, Inwood, Alamo Crossing, Longhorn Quarry, Lookout Canyon, Kinder Ranch, Bentley Manor, and Rogers Creek.
Mr. Powell is married to the former Dana Dillard of Pearsall and has two sons.

The theme of last month’s 82nd Annual Hispanic Chamber Gala’s was “Growing Prosperity by Making Education Our Business.” The Hispanic Chamber’s long-term education initiatives are focused on developing a stronger economy.
