Tina Torres Posts $100,000 in Fundraising
in 1st Week of Campaign
Match challenge from Annie’s List is answered by San Antonio donors
(San Antonio, TX) — “If you want proof that San Antonio families are not going to sit back and take it anymore, just take a look at our fundraising,” declared Tina Torres after raising $100,000 in her first week of campaigning.
“Annie’s List put up $50,000 from their San Antonio fundraising event in a match challenge, and San Antonio donors and activists answered the call once again,” Torres added.
Among the San Antonio donors pledging support to Torres’ campaign for State Representative, District 117, are North and Westside activist Verna Hilario Blackwell, Southside activist Irma Gutierrez, former SAISD board member and education advocate Margaret Mireles, Southside campaign veteran David Plylar, San Antonio trial lawyers Roberto Rios and Mikal Watts, and education advocates Joe and Minnie Sanchez.
“Everyone I talk to — from concerned parents to business leaders — are fed up with the politics as usual at the State Capitol and are ready for a leader who will bring people together and stand up for our schools,” Torres continued. “That’s what this campaign is about. This is not about one person’s political career; this is a community team effort. I think that explains the incredible response we’re getting.”
Torres is a respected attorney whose practice and community service has focused on consumer issues as well as at-risk youth and their families. On top of managing her own legal practice, Torres has devoted countless hours as a volunteer advocate, focusing on children’s issues. The daughter of a public school teacher and pioneering former city councilman Pete Torres, Jr., Torres was raised in a household where education and community involvement were family values.
“My dad taught me never to be afraid of a fight if it’s the right thing to do. He would say that the first step is to take a stand, then do the work,” Torres shared. “Well, it appears I’m not alone in committing myself to doing the work it will take to stand up for our schools and our children.”
