Oldest living 4-Star General Ralph Haines passes away
An Army spokesman says a four-star general has died of natural causes in San Antonio at age 98.
Spokesman Don Manuszewski says retired Army Gen. Ralph E. Haines Jr. (photo) died Wednesday, November 23rd at San Antonio Military Medical Center. Manuszewski says Haines had been the oldest living four-star general.
Haines was vice chief of staff of the Army from 1967 to 1968. He also served as commanding general of the 1st Armored Division and the III Corps at Fort Hood.
A 1935 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, Haines served 37 years in the Army.
Editor's Note: General Haines spoke to my Speech Class and an auditorium full of students @ McCollum High School in 1998. He addressed the students in full uniform complete with JROTC Color Guard and introduced by a cadet. He will be sorely missed.
