28 local Edison High School Students visit New York City and will be on CBS Early Show on Tuesday
Monday August 10th the Thomas Edison High School Upward Bound group will depart San Antonio to participate in a cultural and educational trip to New York City. This includes a stop on Tuesday August 11th @ the CBS new Early Show Plaza where students will get to be on national television. The trip is funded by LULAC National Education Service Center and the U.S. Department of Education.
Upward Bound is a national college prep program that began helping high school students in the 1960s. At the LULAC National Educational Service Center-San Antonio, Upward Bound began works with solely Edison High School students. Upward Bound's purpose is to work with high schools students from 9th to 12th grade in order to prepare them for college.
A total of 28 Edison Upward Bound students will participate in a variety of activities designed to highlight New York City’s educational and cultural opportunities. The trip includes visits to Universities, historical sites, museums, famous parks, and New York’s financial district.
The students will be introduced to world politics, finance, fashion, and cultural diversity. Students will learn about the thousands of immigrants that enriched the city’s history and cultural diversity with a visit to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Chinatown and Little Italy. After a visit to the United Nations Building, their eyes will be open to the world of nations and the issues that tie them together.
Tours of Columbia University and FIT College will give the students an idea about what these institutions of higher learning have to offer. This trip is full of opportunities to get an inside look at certain careers with stops at CBS Morning Show Studio, Wall Street, and The Tommy Hilfiger Tour which includes a sit down with a designer. The students will visit the Tommy Hilfiger office and will have an opportunity to meet with a designer in the company.
This trip marks the end of the six week summer component for the Upward Bound program. Prior to the trip students took college-level courses at Northwest Vista College. Upon the student’s return LNESC staff will continue working to improve and build on the educational opportunities for Upward Bound students at Edison High School.
