Northeast Bexar County Democrats hosted a candidate forum for Tax Assessor Collector, Bexer County Sheriff & Constables from Pct. 2 3, & 4, Saturday, January 7th.

Fundraiser for Larry Ricketts for Bexar County Sheriff, 1-7

We are having a very large campaign fundraiser for my father Larry Ricketts who is running for Sheriff of Bexar County. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday January 7th 2012 at Texas Pride BBQ. I’m not sure if you are familiar with Texas Pride but it is a very well-known Barbeque restaurant that has been featured on Food Network on the show Diners,Drive Ins and Dives.
So it stays very busy on a regular basis. We are having 4 bands along with high end auction items as well as a few door prizes from the community. Below you will find information that might be helpful with marketing your vacation packages during this fundraiser.

I imagine this to be a record crowd; advance tickets are only $20 and $25 at the door. Purchasing a VIP table is $500 that includes (entry fee, private table for 8, appetizers, BBQ meal, private server all evening and recognition of your company)... If you were to purchase a table for your employees that would be wonderful and much appreciated. However if you would be willing to buy at least one or two additional tables ,we would be pleased to work with your marketing team on placing brochures and contact information on each table discussing how to join your vacation company. This would also include signage on the table with your companies name and logo.

There are only a few VIP tables left and I will privately let you in on the fact that they are purchased by an age group and persons belonging to campaigns/clubs or that live in the area that would likely be a great target audience.

The San Antonio Professional and San Antonio College chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists, along with the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists, invite you to spend an evening with Rick Casey, (photo) a journalist who's been covering the Lone Star State for decades.

Currently the host of "Texas Week with Rick Casey" on KLRN, Casey only recently retired as a columnist with the Houston Chronicle. Before moving to Houston, he wrote a column for the San Antonio Light, and later the Express-News. Prior to his column, Casey reported in Washington and freelanced for the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek and the Baltimore Sun. He's also edited the Seattle Times and two San Antonio magazines.

Join us in KLRN's studio @ 501 Broadway, January 11th @ 6:30 p.m. to hear Casey's stories from covering Texas and beyond. A light dinner will be provided, and a Q&A session will follow Casey's talk. In addition, we'll take nominations for the SPJ pro chapter's board.

Ask the Judge: How to remedy a wrongful lawsuit

Many months ago we touched on the topic of what happens when a plaintiff files a lawsuit and discovers that they have sued the wrong party.

In many plaintiffs’ eyes someone has grievously taken advantage of them to the point of legal retaliation. They go on a crusade to right the perceived wrong in a court of law. Many times their crusade is legitimate but for the fact that the person being sued is not to blame.

It is a common but sometimes honest mistake that many plaintiffs commit. They are so incensed and believe one person or a group of people have conspired to dupe them and unscrupulously take advantage of them in an underhanded and devious manner. In their anger they don’t know who to blame. So they sue multiple people.

Many times in their utter frustration or anger, they lash out at the closest individual who might remotely be involved in the situation.

When the Judge informs them that they for whatever reason singled out the wrong person, the Judge will many times recommend that they amend or re-file their complaint to sue the right party or parties. That is permissible and understandable. It slows down the process but by actually following the law affords the plaintiff a better outcome free of frustration and anger.

One classic example of wrongful lawsuit is a situation where a tenant files a complaint for breach of contract for turning off the electricity, putting the tenant’s children in harm’s way.

Instead of naming the landlord or owner of the property, they file the complaint against the house/apartment manager or real estate agent representing the landlord. In that type of lawsuit you sue the owner, not the employees of the owner. That lawsuit against them will automatically be dismissed or “non-suited” on those individuals while keeping the landlord in the suit, assuming the landlord was also named in the lawsuit.

Another example: if you buy a defective product at say a Target or Wal-Mart, you sue the manufacturer of the product, not Target or Wal-Mart who carries the product in their store.

Knowing who to sue will make the process go much quicker for a better result. However, remember that you still must prove your case for why someone owes you money. The burden of proof rests on the plaintiff.

Lastly as always, if you are due in court, be sure to show up to court on time. It is in everyone’s best interest.
