Tejano exhibit at St. Mary’s University

         In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, St. Mary’s University is conducting a lecture series and is displaying an exhibit on Tejano heritage. The University has engaged Texas Tejano.com to provide its world-class “Tejanos in Texas Heritage” traveling exhibit with a number of historical artifacts for display during Hispanic Heritage Month. “We’re happy to have this prestigious exhibit on our campus to provide our mostly Hispanic student population with a pride in what their ancestors did to develop the state of Texas”, says Dr. Sheri King, Director of Student Life.

         The exhibit covers the first 200 years of Texas beginning in 1690 and tells the story of Tejanos through a collection of historical maps, documents, photos and original artwork. It provides the viewer with a synopsis of the role Tejanos played in the development of Texas. This provides them with a sense of pride in the knowledge that their ancestors played a very positive role in the development of Texas.

         St. Mary’s University’s lecture series on Tejano Heritage is led by Dr. Gerald Poyo. The lectures are: “On the Edge of Empire: San Antonio in the 18th Century” and “From Autonomy to Subjugation: Tejano San Antonio in the 19th Century.”  The film “Willie Veláquez: Your Vote is Your Voice” will be shown followed by “Conversation with Charles Cotrell, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science.”

         The exhibit is on display in the gallery on the 2nd floor of the University Center Building through October 13th and is free and open to the public. The exhibit can be viewed 7 a.m - 12 a.m M-F and 10 a.m-10 p.m on weekends. Everyone is invited to come and learn about the beginning of Texas.
