The Board of Directors and staff of the Mexican
American Unity Council is announcing the recipients of three Lifetime
Achievement awards and the recipients of a four-year scholarships to high school
students from Lanier and Memorial High Schools.
Achievment Awards
Spirit of
Education Award: Dr. Manuel P. Berriozábal
In 1979, Dr.
Berriozábal founded the Pre-freshman Engineering Program at UTSA with help from
other colleges and universities, and the U.S. Department of Energy. PREP is a
mathematics-based academic enrichment program, running for eight weeks during
the summer, aimed at middle and high school students. Students learn about
mathematics, logical thinking, abstract reasoning, computer science, and the
mathematical sciences. Today, the PREP has been very successful, and it has been
replicated as the Texas Pre-freshman Engineering Program on 25 college campuses
in 15 Texas cities, and as Proyecto Access on 9 college campuses in 8 states
outside of Texas.
In 1994, Dr. B
received the Hispanic Heritage Award in Education. In 2000, he was inducted as
Charter Member into the Texas Science Hall of Fame along with four astronauts
and four Nobel Laureates. In 2001, he received the most prestigious award of the
Mathematical Association of America, the Yueh-Gin Gung and Dr. Charles Y. Hu
Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics.
Community Spirit Award:
Ms. Patricia Jimenez
In 1979, Raul Jimenez, established a Thanksgiving
Day event designed to serve seniors and individuals without families. The Raul
Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner continues to provide senior citizens a “community
dinner table” to enjoy a hot and nutritious turkey dinner with all the trimmings
on Thanksgiving Day where seniors get to celebrate the holiday with their peers,
and enjoy live music and entertainment.
On October 26, 1998, Patricia found herself
grieving for the loss of her father and remembering his motto, ‘We come
into this world with nothing, we leave with nothing. What counts is what we do
in between. I believe in caring and sharing." Patricia shares her
father’s spirit of giving and rather than ending this joyous event for so many,
she rolled up her sleeves, became Chairman of the event and continues to carry
the family tradition, Patricia embodies her father’s spirit and The Raul
Jimenez Dinner is held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center staffed with
over 3000 volunteers and serving over 25,000 meals.
The Albert A. Pena Jr. Lifetime
Achievement Award:
The Honorable Charles A. Gonzalez
The Honorable Charles A Gonzalez was born “El Cinco de Mayo”, May 5th in San
Antonio, Texas.. He is a graduate of Edison High School, the University of
Texas, Austin and St. Mary’s School of Law. Charlie served in the Texas Air
National Guard from 1969-1975. He has been a teacher, private practice lawyer,
County and District judge in Bexar County before getting elected to the
106th Congressional delegation and six succeeding Congresses (January
3, 1999-January 3, 2013) before deciding not to seek reelection.
