Thousands watch re-enactment of Passion of Christ, 3-29

Thousands of people, from religious followers to curious onlookers, watched Friday's annual downtown re-enactment of the Passion of the Christ.

“We are very proud to continue to pass on this tradition,” Archbishop Gustavo GarcĂa-Siller said before the event.

In a religious service in Milam Park, where the procession began, the archbishop told the crowd of thousands that the drama reflects God's love for humanity.

“It is not theater today,” he said. “It is the reality of God's love for us.”

John Austin has been involved in the drama for several years. But this year he carried the cross in the role of Jesus.

Austin said he's been rehearsing with others in a cast of more than 100 people for twice a week since January.

“It takes a lot mentally and spiritually, and I just leave it in his hands,” he said.
The procession from Milam Park to San Fernando Cathedral — with the archbishop carrying the cross part of the way as is customary — was completed Friday as onlookers followed, taking photos and videos with their cellphones.

Jesus' crucifixion is being depicted now. Watch mySA.com and Saturday's Express-News for more.
