Dr. Michael Soto for Texas State School Board, District 3

Dr. Michael Soto & son Alejo

Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Colleagues,

Many of you hold education near and dear to your heart because you know that if Texas continues to teach to the test, thwart innovative and creative thinking, and undermine proven education standards we will lose our standing as one of the greatest states in business (export and innovation and more) in the nation.

Michael Soto, my husband is running for State Board of Education, District 3, and I ask that you support his efforts in becoming a voice and a vote for putting Texas kids first and high academic standards first.

This race is important because right now school districts are being micro managed by the State Board of Education; creating strict testing criteria that thwarts innovation; they are misspending the Texas Permanent Fund; they are politicizing science, social studies, and sex education when we cannot afford to; and more importantly they are not thinking of Texas' future in a global economic context.

The State Board of Education is one of the most important boards in our state when it comes to Texas education -- it sets academic standards, approves textbooks, it holds the fund where all our textbooks are funded by, and the Board should be a voice for setting the standard of success in Texas schools.

Michael has decided to run for this position to bring a voice and a vote for fact and science based education and textbooks, protecting the Fund to serve its purpose of providing textbooks to all school kids, listening to the front liners of education (teachers, parents, school boards, and community leaders) and to counter the politics that this board has succumbed to. Michael will put Texas Kids First!

I hope you will join Michael and I on December 1st at El Mirador at his campaign kickoff and fundraiser to change the dynamics this board so needs. Our host committee has been tremendous, and I hope your response is tremendous. Visit Michael's website at

Sincerely,
Celina Pena
