Community questions why VIA appointees vote against public transportation

Citizens, community organizations, and highway lobbyists packed the Via Metro Center Community Room yesterday, with at least 40 Toll Party supporters left standing outside due to the capacity crowd (208 was the posted capacity) at the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) meeting.

The unconstitutional composition of the MPO is being challenged in court. (http://texasturf.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=311&Itemid=26).

Hundreds of citizens (150 were opposed to tolls, and barely 40 stood up to be counted in favor) packed the community room.

“They held the meeting in the middle of the workday, in the middle of Christmas, and didn’t provide a large enough venue, and they didn’t have sufficient seating or parking,” Hall criticized. “They left seniors standing outside and inside for more than 2 hours with no chairs! I think it’s pretty safe to say they discouraged public attendance and feedback.”

Taxpayer heroes Senator Carlos Uresti, State Rep. David Leibowitz, and Commissioner Tommy Adkisson grilled the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority and managed to poke plenty of holes in their figures that were off by 50% in some cases. It prompted Director Terry Brechtel to make some calls mid-meeting to get her facts straight.

Automated calls were made throughout the City since Friday targeting swing votes on the MPO Board like Councilmember Diane Cibrian (Dist. 8) who campaigned on lowering taxes. The callers were told they’d receive another phone call following the vote to inform them of who voted to raise taxes.

The proponents and the opposition both claimed the greater share of emails submitted (TURF confirmed over 1,200 emails submitted.
