Youth Curfew story features Judge Steve Walker, 4-25

The San Antonio Police Department is considering making changes to the youth curfew law.

SAPD did not go into detail about proposed changes when asked Wednesday, but department spokesman Sgt. Javier Salazar said changes were being considered.

Judge Steve Walker, of Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, has heard many curfew cases while on the bench

He said the number of children being cited for breaking curfew laws is on the decline."They're doing something wrong -- they're skipping school. But I would not put them in the same category as common-day criminals," Walker said.

The former teacher had an idea on what could be done to keep that number dropping.

"Maybe, depending on where police pick them up, ask the kids where do they go to school and then escort them back to campus where all the kids can see them being brought in," he said.

Judge Walker said police officers should not serve as babysitters for children breaking curfew.

He said it's possible children who decide to skip school during the day end up at a friend's house as opposed to being in public where they could be caught by police.
