Express-News endorses former CW Elena Guajardo for District 7
Guajardo well-prepared to represent District 7
Former councilwoman is the strongest candidate in field.
Former City Councilwoman Elena Guajardo stands out in a crowded field as the candidate most ready and able to effectively represent the people of District 7.
Five candidates are vying to replace outgoing Councilman Justin Rodriguez, who unseated Guajardo four years ago after she had served only one two-year term.
In addition to Guajardo, Ruben A. Cortez, Chris Medina, Fred A. Rangel and Gloria Rodriguez are seeking the post.
Guajardo, who unsuccessfully challenged Rodriguez in 2009, remains dedicated to public service, and she clearly has done her homework, demonstrating a deep knowledge about issues that are of concern to District 7 residents today.
Guajardo has focused on bond projects, including a controversial revamped Woodlawn Lake project, and will voice neighborhood concerns if she is elected.
After retiring from Southwestern Bell in 2000, Guajardo threw herself into community service and learning about neighborhood politics. As she was in her first term, Guajardo will be a full-time council member. And, of course, she already understands the workings of City Hall. Guajardo is familiar with the variety of issues that come at council members.
She has demonstrated that she is serious about representing average people, and she was a consensus-builder during her first term on the council. The voters of District 7 should take advantage of the opportunity to send an experienced advocate to City Hall on their behalf.
