County Judge asks for disaster aid for farmers & ranchers

County Judge Nelson Wolff (photo) asks for disaster aid for farmers and ranchers

County Judge Nelson Wolff has requested that the Governor’s Division of Emergency Management officially declare Bexar County a disaster area as a result of the dry conditions experienced over the past few months.

Because of the drought conditions and high winds, with subsequent fires between Aug. 1, 2007, and Jan. 16, Bexar County farmers and ranchers have sustained damage to wheat, oats, native grasses and coastal hay. The estimated crop loss is 50 percent to 65 percent. Additionally, at least 10 farm structures were damaged and another five destroyed by wildfires fueled by the high winds and dry conditions.

If the county receives a disaster area declaration, farmers and ranchers would be eligible for low-interest emergency loans.
