The Bexar County Democratic Party Cares for Our Wounded Troops

The Soldier & Family Assistance Center (SFAC) is a "hang-out" for "wounded warriors" (their term) from the Afghan and Iraq wars who are undergoing long-term rehabilitative programs at BAMC, but with little to occupy their time between therapy sessions.

It serves their families as well. It was initiated 3½ years ago, and is the only one in the country to date. It provides a fantastic array of services as well as networking for the soldiers &/or their families, with a variety of support services. It is a beehive of activity seven days a week with the Program Director, Judith Markelz, the electric hub.

There are several large screen TVs, computers, phones and video players available as well as books, magazines and games. A table of snacks is always available, with homemade cookies by far the favorite snack . Special events are scheduled at the Center as well as off-base trips to Spurs games, Fiesta, Rodeo, etc. The Center is staffed primarily by volunteers (including some of the wounded warriors), with Ms Markelz and one additional salaried employee.

The Republicans have been supporting SFAC much more visibly than any of the Democratic groups and six months ago the BCDP CEC decided that needed to change. It was agreed that each of the Democratic groups in Bexar County would take a different month and bring clearly labeled contributions at some point during the month. The month of November is the month for the Party itself to bring items.

This is what is needed: Phone Cards, Bottled Water & Homemade Cookies packaged in zip locked freezer bags. However other items that are welcomed include: gift cards (Costco, Target, Academy, PX, etc) , popcorn, individually wrapped snacks, music, books, pens, pencils, diapers, personal hygiene items, frequent flyer miles.

Please bring these items to our CEC meeting tomorrow, November 6th. If you will be unable to attend the meeting you may bring any nonperishable items to Madeleine at the BCDP Headquarters, 3010 N St. Mary's (785-0962). We will have labels to attach to everything.
