The Art of Mosaic, a Celebration, a symposium on mosaics on Saturday, May 24th from 1-4 p.m. at Bihl Haus Arts, begins with the keynote lecture, titled “Mosaics in Context: The Medium and the Message,” by Nayla Kabazi Muntasser, Ph.D.
Dr. Muntaser’s four-part PowerPoint lecture on the history of mosaics begins with the invention of mosaic. She’ll then talk about how Roman mosaics at Pompeii, Ostia, and Rome were used as decoration, propaganda and forms of manipulation.
Next, the professor will discuss mosaics in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and their structure and symbolism in the transition from floor to wall, from house to church. And finally, Dr. Muntasser will answer the question: Why did mosaics virtually die out?
Dr. Nayla Kabazi Muntasser is a Research Associate and Lecturer in Roman Art History at the University of Texas in Austin. She specializes in Roman architecture as a complex of form, decoration, and socio/political expression.
She has been teaching art history in Texas since 1986, having taught at Rice, the University of Houston, Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas A & M and the University of Texas in Austin.
Bihl Haus Arts (www.bihlhausarts.org) is a not-for-profit contemporary art gallery located at 2803 Fredericksburg Rd., on the premises of Primrose at Monticello Park Senior Apartments, an affordable housing community.
