"Why We March" Series features former Sudanese slave

Former Sudanese Slave Francis Bok Speaks With Human Rights Panel In San Antonio

Francis Bok, a former Sudanese slave and the worlds most famous contemporary abolitionist, will headline the "Know Why You Are Marching Civil Rights" and Film Series at the Martin Luther King Academy on Saturday, May 31st at noon.


Bok will detail surviving a decade of slavery after being captured by Arab raiders in 1986 as told in his book, Escape from Slavery: The Trust Story of My Ten Years in Captivity and My Journey to Freedom in America.

He will join a human rights panel analyzing Dr. King's global message with his former colleague Tommy Calvert Jr., former head of the American Anti-Slavery Group in Boston, Caesar Ricci, second year University of Texas Health Science Center School medical student who has visited Darfur on multiple occasions, and moderator Jon Gurwitz, columnist for the San Antonio Express-News who has written extensively about the suffering in Sudan.

The series will pay tribute to Bok with Africans drummers T-Bow Gonzalez featuring MWENDO, the Sam Houston High School Gospel Choir, and W.W. White Elementary Praise Dancers.
