San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists Gala, 8-19

The SAAHJ gala committee is gearing up for the 18th annual gala, tentatively scheduled for Friday, Aug. 19. Our first gala committee meeting will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Lisa’s Mexican Restaurant, 815 Bandera Road, 78228.

The committee needs your time and talents, and we welcome all of you to join us. A wide variety of subcommittees/tasks are open to you, including:

  • Sponsorships/phone bank
  • Individual ticket sales
  • Financial/invoices
  • Gala production, including video arrangements
  • Registration/guest list
  • Media/press releases
  • Entertainment
  • Gala goodie bags
  • Gala program
The Jan. 16th meeting will review all these tasks.

If you’ve attended our gala, you know that it’s a huge affair with lots of moving parts, and SAAHJ needs numerous volunteers to help make it a reality. If you’re schedule permits, please sign up for the gala committee by emailing gala co-chair Elaine Ayala at

This year’s honorees are UT journalism professor Maggie Rivas Rodriguez, who will receive the Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism; Maria Antonietta Berriozabal, this year’s recipient of the SAAHJ Community Service Award; and Little Joe Hernandez, who will receive the Corazon de Oro Award. As in year’s past, thousands will be awarded in scholarships. Last year’s gala awarded $40,000 to San Antonio students pursuing careers in media.
