Norma Garcia became a donor mom, after losing her daughter on August 11th, 2001 in a car accident and has made educating the Public about Organ and Tissue donation her new journey and passion in life.
Garcia has volunteered at several events. She has served on the National Donor Memorial Advisory Committee for UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) and assisted in the design of the memorial in Richmond VA.
Honoring Americans donor families speaking alongside such distinguished guest as Kenneth P. Moritsugu, M.D.M.P.H Deputy Surgeon General, Richard DeVos, CoFounder of Amway Corporation, Chair for UNOS National Speaker and owner of the NBA Orlando Magic, and Reg Green, Author of the Nicholas Effect.
In 2003 Garcia and her family represented San Antonio, TX at the National Kidney Foundation Olympic Games in Disney World Florida. In 2004 Ms. Garcia was invited to be keynote speaker at a fundraiser given by Mr. Rich Devos in his home of Palm Springs Florida to benefit the National Donor Memorial.
Ms. Garcia also serves her local community by being a volunteer & speaker for TOSA (Texas Organ Sharing Alliance in San Antonio, TX). Garcia has shared her compelling story of the gift of life to an overwhelming number of audiences. She has made an enormous contribution with her story to the medical community, bringing encouragement and a new sense of passion to the Best Practices classes on Organ and Tissue Donation staff in local Hospitals.
She has spoken before Doctors, Surgeons, Nurses and staff of Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX and surrounding areas including Kerrville, Seguin, New Braunfels, Frederisksburg and Jourdanton, TX, and was a guest speaker to the military community in Lackland Air Force Base.

Your story about highlighted the tragic shortage of human organs for transplant operations.
Over half of the 99,000 Americans on the national transplant waiting list will die before they get a transplant. Most of these deaths are needless. Americans bury or cremate about 20,000 transplantable organs every year. Over 6,000 of our neighbors suffer and die needlessly every year as a result.
There is a simple way to put a big dent in the organ shortage -- give organs first to people who have agreed to donate their own organs when they die.
Giving organs first to organ donors will convince more people to register as organ donors. It will also make the organ allocation system fairer. People who aren't willing to share the gift of life should go to the back of the waiting list as long as there is a shortage of organs.
Anyone who wants to donate their organs to others who have agreed to donate theirs can join LifeSharers. LifeSharers is a non-profit network of organ donors who agree to offer their organs first to other organ donors when they die. Membership is free at www.lifesharers.org or by calling 1-888-ORGAN88. There is no age limit, parents can enroll their minor children, and no one is excluded due to any pre-existing medical condition.
