Andrea’s annual Limeade Picnic in the Park brings toys to kids with mental health problems
San Antonio – It’s that time of year again, when San Antonians cool off with an ice cold glass of sweet limeade and at the same time help a youngster fulfill her mission of providing toys to kids with serious mental health problems.
Eleven-year-old Andrea Canchola’s sixth annual limeade stand – “Andrea’s Limeade Picnic in the Park,” benefiting the Southwest Mental Health Center – is set for July 20th at San Antonio’s MacArthur Park Pavilion No. 4 from noon to 5 p.m. Proceeds from the event will be used to buy toys for kids at the non-profit mental health facility for kids age 3-17.
"Thanks to everybody for all the donations during the first five years," said Andrea, whose theme for the limeade stand is “Don’t be sour for kids.” “Kids need toys to play with and I want to help. I am just one kid wanting to help other kids and it’s been great to see how many other people want to help, too."
Some of the kids at the Southwest Mental Health Center remain there up to 90 days while undergoing treatment, some arriving with no toys. Andrea’s mom, Leticia Canchola, Director of Nursing at the Center, notes that toys are not just for fun but actually serve an important therapeutic role for the kids.
Andrea opened her first limeade stand to benefit the mental health center five years ago in front of her home. She was amazed at how many people wanted to join her quest to provide toys to the children under the center’s care. Over the years, many adults, after hearing Andrea talk about her mission, have gladly opened their wallets and checkbooks to help out. She raised a total of more than $3,000 for the center in her first five years.
Andrea’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, last year she received the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy from the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Andrea is also a three time nominee for the United Way’s Youth Volunteer of the Year award. “I get excited because I know I have a chance to help some kids and that makes my heart feel good,” said Andrea. Limeade is the highlight for Andrea’s summer.
In addition to plenty of ice cold limeade, Andrea and her family will be serving hot dogs and chips. No minimum donation is required, and the stand will open from noon to 5 p.m.
