This is a unique experience that I hope you will take full advantage. The City of San Antonio's Housing and Neighborhood Services Department is pleased to present this free graffiti education opportunity, featuring:

International Graffiti Expert
Victoria Wilson-Merritt
“Graffiti is Everyone’s Problem:
A New Approach to Graffiti Education”

Saturday, June 28th
Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N Hackberry
Free Registration 8-8:45 a.m.
Program 9-3 p.m.

In New York City during the mid 1990’s, sociologist Victoria Wilson-Merritt began researching the relationship between Hip Hop subculture and crime. Victoria slipped into over 100 groups, gangs and crews within the Hip Hop subculture to understand how they utilize graffiti and what effect it has on communities.

Ms. Wilson-Merritt developed offender profiles and youth diversion programs that helped significantly reduce crime and recidivism rates in New York and other localities. Her accomplishments earned her interviews on programs such as Good Morning America, 20/20, and CNN. She has become recognized as an international expert in graffiti and has been a featured speaker at the International Graffiti Symposiums in Oslo, Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark and was the keynote speaker at the American Association of Code Enforcement’s national convention.

As a response to the need for youth education, Ms. Wilson-Merritt wrote Graffiti in Tahiti, geared towards children ages 6-10 years. As a part of this special program, we will integrate a press conference into the presentation where the book will be read (by a special guest speaker) and copies will be donated to ALL City of San Antonio Library branches!
