Women are often the keepers and broadcasters of family culture, through foodways, oral histories, photo albums, scrap books, and the like. In the exhibit True Stories: Inherited, Salvaged, Embroidered, which opens with a reception at Bihl Haus Arts on Friday, November 21st, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Marilyn Lanfear explores her role as family historian in two and three-dimensional visual histories.
In True Stories, Lanfear translates personal family narratives into a larger familial mythology that rings true across cultures and generations. She combines a variety of materials—wood, stone, paper, lead—with ordinary objects—cast iron beds, discarded architectural elements, Victorian furniture, dish towels, straw-seated chairs.
Marilyn Lanfear will present an artist’s gallery talk, which is free and open to the public, at Bihl Haus Arts on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 2 pm. A full-color brochure, produced especially for this exhibit, pairs images of 8 of the works in the show with stories written by the artist.
