SAMA Celebrates Día de los Muertos

The San Antonio Museum of Art will be celebrating Día de los Muertos with fun activities for all ages and interests. Don’t forget to stop by the Nelson Rockefeller Latin American Art Center at SAMA, one of the most comprehensive collections of Latin American art in the United States , to see our collection of Hispanic Folk Art – a perfect way to end your visit!

Lecture and Book Signing:
The Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos: A Lecture by Photographer Denis Defibaugh & Author Ward S. Albro
Sunday, October 14th, 3 p.m.
Auditorium. Free with Museum admission
In recent years, Día de los Muertos has become widely known not only throughout Mexico but also in the United States , drawing tourists in large numbers. Since 1993, photographer Denis Defibaugh and author Ward S. Albro have visited festivals in Oaxaca and surrounding villages where customs marking this passage have evolved over generations. Join Defibaugh and Albro for a lecture followed by a signing of their recent book entitled, The Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos.

Day of the Dead School Partnership
San Antonio Museum of Art and the advanced art students of Brackenridge High School will work collaboratively to create an ofrenda or altar to be displayed in the Great Hall. Local artist and educator Terry Ybanez will assist students in completing the ofrenda to be displayed through the first week of November.

Family Activities: Day of the Dead
Saturday, November 3rd, noon to 4 p.m.
Hops House. Free with Museum admission.

Workshop: Sugar Skulls: Calaveras Para Todos noon to 2 p.m.
Make traditional sugar skulls used in Day of the Dead altars while learning about the history of this rich cultural tradition.

Workshop: The Art of Papel Picado 2 to 4 p.m.
Learn the techniques of paper cutting, a traditional folk art used in Mexico to create colorful and intricate decorations for tables, windows, ceilings, altars and banners for outdoor festivals.

Lecture: Images of Death in Latin American Art
Sunday, November 4th, 3 p.m.
Auditorium. Free with Museum admission.
A lecture presented by Dr. Marion Oettinger, Jr., Curator of Latin American Art and Director of the San Antonio Museum of Art will examine images of death from 18th - 20th century Mexico with special attention placed on the use of the death image as a mediator between good and evil and the ceremonies in which they are used.
