Public hearing-property tax rate on Council agenda
Dear concerned taxpayer:
This Thursday, city council will hold a public hearing on the 2008 property tax rate. The hearing will be at 5pm. Individuals wanting to express an opinion on the tax rate should sign-up earlier if possible.
City staff is recommending an 8% property tax increase. Last year, council raised property taxes 7.99%.
HTA attended the August budget hearing presenting several important issues for the council to consider:
1. According to a 2004 study by the Independent Budget Office, San Antonio taxpayers pay the highest local taxes in Texas and is the fourth highest taxed city in the nation.
2. Taxpayers must provide basic services for their families like housing, food, utilities, transportation and schooling.
3. Most taxpayers are not receiving 8% pay raises.
4. The best way to help overburdened taxpayers is to allow them to keep more of the money they earn.
It's important council hear from you. Please send me an e-mail if you plan to attend Thursday's meeting.
We look forward to seeing you.
