Mayor of Von Ormy proposes propety tax cut by 10 %

Mayor of Von Ormy proposes 10% property tax cut, would give residents significant tax relief for the third consecutive year.

Mayor Art Martinez de Vara of Von Ormy (Bexar County) has submitted a
proposed 2013 city budget which includes a 10% property tax cut for
the third year in a row. The budget also calls for increased line
items for fire protection and animal control.

"The power of government to tax should be used judiciously. It is our obligation to operate government efficiently, provide quality and effective municipal services and return excess to our taxpayers.  Excessive taxation is unjust taxation."

Von Ormy has one of the lowest property tax rates in Bexar County.  If
passed Von Ormy’s rate will be lowered to 28.8 cents per $100 valuation.
This is nearly half of San Antonio's rate, which has remained at 56.569 per $100 for several years.  The city has accomplished this through frugal spending and concentration of development of a stronger sales tax base.

Von Ormy operates a "virtual city hall" and is patrolled by volunteer City Marshals. "Some people ask why we do not have a brick and mortar building, but in 2012 we can run a city with a website, a cell phone and a fax
machine. Why waste taxpayers’ money on an office, when we need to pave
the roads, patrols the streets and provides animal control?

The 2012 budgets includes regular litter control, curbside recycling,
street lighting, completion of a new fire station and further
development of the city park.  In addition to its road funds, the city
has saved a $100,000 reserve fund, which is equal to 1/3 of the city's
annual operating budget.

Mayor Art Martinez de Vara believes that keeping low property taxes is a
priority for homeownership.  "So long as Texans pay annual property
taxes, there is no true property ownership.
