More on the S-CHIP veto by candidate Jim McGrody

Candidate for Cong. Dist. 23

Core Set of Principles Should Guide Renewal of SCHIP!
1. SCHIP Must Serve Eligible Low-Income Children First:
Jim McGrody believes we must focus on the original intent of the program: cover low-income children first.
2. SCHIP Should Not Force Children Out of Private Health Insurance:
Jim McGrody believes SCHIP should not replace or significantly impact those who already have private health insurance with a government run program.
3. SCHIP Should Cover Low-Income American Children:
Jim McGrody believes citizenship verification standards are critically important to ensuring that only U.S. citizens and certain legal immigrants are allowed access to taxpayer-funded benefits.
4. SCHIP Funding for Low-Income Children Should be Stable:
Jim McGrody believes SCHIP should cover low-income children without using budget gimmicks that put the program in jeopardy.
5. Families Ineligible for SCHIP Should Have More Health Care Choices :
Jim McGrody believes low-income and middle-class families need more health care options--like premium assistance programs--to purchase affordable, high quality health plans that best meet the needs of their families. The best way to achieve this goal would be to combine a reauthorized SCHIP program with a tax credit for children in families just above the basic eligibility level for SCHIP.
