14th Annual Cesar E. Chavez celebration schedule

March 2010 marks the 44th anniversary of Cesar Chavez’s historic 350-mile pilgrimage from Delano to Sacramento, which drew national attention to the plight of farm workers in America. To honor this anniversary and to educate and energize people with the power of civic engagement, we invite you to join us for several events commemorating Cesar Chavez, including the 14th annual Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice.

City Council Proclamation by Mayor Julián Castro, Thursday, March 18th at 5 p.m. City Council Chambers, Municipal Plaza Building Jaime P. Martinez, chairman and founder of the 14th annual Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice, will be joined by community leaders and members of the Cesar E. Chavez organizing committee, to accept a special proclamation on behalf of the City of San Antonio.

Labor Tribute to the Legacy of Cesar E. Chavez, Saturday, March 20th at noon, Samuel Gompers Memorial Statue (near River Walk, across from the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center)

Labor leaders and community activists will gather for a wreath laying ceremony to honor Samuel Gompers and Cesar E. Chavez. Presented by the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, AFL-CIO.

Remembering Cesar E. Chavez, Film Tribute, Saturday, March 20th at 6 p.m. @ the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Theatre, 1300 Guadalupe Street. Film series highlighting the life, struggles and contributions of Cesar E. Chavez.

Mass for Farm Workers Sunday, March 21th at 8 a.m. San Fernando Cathedral, 115 W. Main Plaza. Catholic mass celebrating the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez.

Cesar E. Chavez Student Art Contest and Awards Presentation, Sunday, March 21st at 6 p.m. Institute of Texan Cultures, 801 S. Bowie St. Noe Garza, Columbia Heights art teacher and Chicano artist Abel Ortiz will judge artwork submitted by elementary students.

Cesar E. Chavez Interfaith Ecumenical Service, Wednesday, March 24th at 6 p.m. @ Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 1321 El Paso Street. Multi-faith celebration through prayer and song in partnership with local spiritual leaders. Service will include musical performance. All faiths are welcomed to attend.

Cesar E. Chavez Legacy and Educational Fund Scholarship Recipients Dinner Awards, Friday, March 26th, at 6:30 p.m. La Villita Assembly Hall, 401 Villita. Mistress of Ceremonies: Monica Navarro, news anchor for KWEX Univision. Keynote Speaker: Honorable Joaquin Castro, Texas State House of Representatives. Individual tickets-$50; Table of ten-$500.
