Local Senior Citizens Enjoy Abundance of “Sunshine” on Grandparents Day

Local senior citizens took part in a special celebration last weekend in honor of Grandparents Day. At the Villas of Leon Valley, residents enjoyed cake and punch with their neighbors, family and friends while a mariachi band played favorite songs that many sang and danced to.

Adding to the enjoyment of the day, each senior resident was presented with a “Shoebox For Seniors” gift box. Organized and sponsored by Sunshine For Seniors, the gift boxes and gift items were provided by the following businesses:

SAS Shoemakers, Care Improvement Plus, Well Care, Bravo Health, Caring Companions, Home Instead Senior Care, Heart to Heart Home Care, Visiting Physicians, Financial Solutions, New Lifestyles, The Senior Resource Guide, Doris Griffin with Jefferson Outreach For Older People, Central Park Lions Club, Acadian on Call and Cyndi Blackmon with Planto Roe.

“Shoeboxes for Seniors” was a way of honoring our senior citizens on Grandparents Day and providing useful items that perhaps some seniors might not have the opportunity to purchase for themselves, says Dana Schilling, owner and president of Sunshine For Seniors and Sunshine For You.

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, organizations and individuals, volunteers were able to fill the boxes with an assortment of items including note pads, rubber bands, pens, paper clips, magnifiers, batteries, gift cards, cookies and candy.”

Schilling hopes that “Shoeboxes For Seniors” will become an annual gift-giving event. “You can bet that Sunshine For Seniors and Sunshine For You will be focusing on recruiting other participants for next year, added Schilling. It is too important that we remember to show our appreciation and to honor the generation who did so much for us.”
