KWEX Univision 41 launches "Proyecto U." mentoring program

KWEX UNIVISION 41 San Antonio partners with higher Education Institutions to launch groundbreaking mentorship program "Proyecto U."

Latest initiative showcases student-driven content through Univision fellowship support of local colleges and universities

As part of its ongoing commitment to education, KWEX Univision 41 San Antonio announced an innovative new educational partnership program, “Proyecto U” (Project U). The groundbreaking scholastic initiative pairs students from universities and colleges in San Antonio with the local Emmy® award-winning KWEX Univision 41 station, to provide tomorrow’s communicators with unparalleled access and insights into today’s fast-paced communications industry.

Launched as part of the multi-year, national education campaign “Es el momento” (The Moment is Now), Univision’s multi-platform education initiative aimed at improving academic achievement for U.S. Hispanics, Proyecto U is designed to enhance curriculums for a larger student audience and allow student-related issues to be a part of the local newscast. The initiative allows for further collaboration between Univision and higher education institutions in the San Antonio community, to expose students to a real-life work environment as they define their future career goals.

“Proyecto U was a concept originated by the news team at KWEX, which we hope becomes a nationwide model as we strive to offer an invaluable real-life experience to tomorrow’s workforce,” Luis PatiƱo, senior vice president, Univision Television Group. “Univision’s continued growth and innovation in Spanish-language news reflects the growth of the Hispanic community, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this changing landscape by developing an initiative that provides support and resources for the next generation of communicators.”

“Proyecto U” will offer comprehensive work experience and coaching for students to develop technical skills under the supervision of the KWEX Univision 41 News Department. During the program’s implementation, participants will have the opportunity to create a Spanish-language newscast that will air as part of “Noticias 41 Univision Fin de Semana” (Univision 41 Weekend News), fulfilling different on-camera and behind-the-scenes roles. Selected students from surrounding area schools will be evaluated by Univision News personnel, university faculty and fellow peers. The first on-air segments will be pre-taped and the final show will air live from Univision San Antonio’s studios.

“Proyecto U” is a collaboration with Univision 41 San Antonio and the schools of communications at Texas A&M San Antonio, Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU), Saint Mary’s University, University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), Alamo Colleges, Trinity, as well as the Brackenridge High School media class. For the pilot program, only students from A&M San Antonio, OLLU, Saint Mary’s University and UIW will participate. Students from Brackenridge High (who are 18 years old or more) will perform technical production roles.
