La Carpa Mini-Symposium
Sat., Aug. 9th, 2-4 p.m.
at Bihl Haus Arts

Bihl Haus Arts is pleased to present La Carpa: A Mini-Symposium, Saturday, August 9th, 2-4 p.m. The symposium begins with a gallery talk by Adriana Garcia on her monumental paintings in the current exhibit Entre La Carpa/Inside the Tent, which continues at Bihl Haus Arts through August 30th.

Then, Dr. Michaele Haynes, curator at the Witte Museum , will discuss the history of las carpas, or Mexican tent circuses, which uniquely combined circus elements, such as trapeze and tightrope artists, and vaudeville performances with comic routines and song and dance numbers.

The Witte has a collection of artifacts, papers and photographs from Carpa Cubana and Carpa Garcia that is part of the Hertzberg Circus Collection, now part of the Witte.

The mini-symposium concludes with a special appearance by Virginia Garcia, a performer with the Garcia troupe. (For background on La Carpa Garcia, please go to http://users.marshall.edu/~brooks/La-Carpa-Garcia.htm)
