A 4th of July message from Kathi Thomas

Celebrating the 4th of July means different things to different people. In these days of real challenges to our freedom by our government, I hope that everyone will take a moment to read over the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
These are words that mean at least as much to us today as they did in Revolutionary War times, when they had an oppressive government that didn't give people their due justice, didn't promote the general welfare, and certainly didn't believe in the blessings of liberty for everyone! Hmmmm, sound familiar?
We started the holiday with a dance at a recreation center in Comal County, where we met so many nice people. A lot of folks have told me to "write off Comal County- there are no Democrats there."
Well, let me tell you, there are- they've just been quiet, waiting for candidates to come find them! There are also some nice Independents and Republicans who care about water issues there- and they're wanting serious change in our government!
We started at the Wimberley 4th of July Parade, and then I conducted the Hill Country Community Band for the concert. We did a couple of combined pieces with the Community Chorus too-it was great fun, and well received.
When we played "Stars & Stripes Forever", flags were waving all over the place- it was a great place to be. People were there from all over the place, there alone, with friends, and/or with family- a wonderful _expression of what is best about smaller towns- community spirit, coming together to celebrate the freedoms for which our ancestors fought.
This November, we need to send a message to the Capitols in Washington and Austin- loudly and clearly-- that we declare our freedom again- freedom from the "law for sale" that has been going on these past years, freedom from our civil liberties being stripped away, freedom from someone trying to tell us what is "right" to believe. My ancestors fought for these freedoms, and I intend to continue that fight. I hope you'll join me.
Get involved in campaigns- we all could use your help- call or e-mail a few friends about our campaigns, send us a few bucks, sign up for blockwalking, put a bumper sticker on your car. Declare your independence and let's change the face of Texas and Washington politics!
