American galleries
In honor of the 25th anniversary of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., March, SAMA is pleased to present an installation of works by African American artists, spanning the last 200 years. San Antonio hosts one of the largest MLK marches in the nation. This year it is expected to draw more than 100,000 participants, including adults and children. In addition to the paintings so generously lent by Harriet and Harmon Kelley and Leo and Irene Edwards, the exhibition will also include works from the Museum’s permanent collection donated by or partially purchased with funds donated by the Kelleys.
Viewing these works of art allows us the opportunity to reflect upon the struggles and triumphs of the African American artistic community and the broad range of African American identities and experiences. This marvelous installation will be on view in the 3rd floor American galleries and will be accompanied by a cell-phone tour.
The activities for February’s First Sunday for Families on February 2nd will focus on Black History Month.
