In conjunction with the San Antonio Library's recruitment drive to sign up over a million local Bexar County residents to register for a Libary Card, Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 Steve Walker is mandating that all truants coming before his court for failure to attend school procure a valid Libary Card from one of the branch libraries.
During his first truancy docket, Monday, January 26th, delinquent students and parents charged with contributing to the failure of their children to attend school, were instructed by the Judge to obtain the cards before they left the courtroom.
Representatives from the San Antonio Public Library were present during the court proceedings in a conference room adjacent to the court chambers where they issued the Libary Cards as the students entered the courtroom for their hearings.
The local media interviewed students and parents in the courtroom on their reaction to the mandatory requirement to sign up for a card as part of their community service. The response was generally positive.
