Final election results from the Texas Secretary of State’s office show Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, carrying each of the 17 counties in Senate District 21, 79-21 percent.

“I am deeply thankful to the voters in Senate District 21,” Zaffirini said. “There is so much that remains to be done for South Texas families, and I thank them for their continued faith in my ability to make a difference.”

Senator Zaffirini beat her Democratic opponent in his two home counties: 73.32-26.68 percent in Bexar County and 75.86-24.24 percent in La Salle County. In Webb, her home county, she beat him 78.24-21.76 percent.

She faces Louis Bruni in the November general election. Formerly a Webb County judge, Bruni lost his re-election in the 2004 Democratic primary. He came in last with 18 percent against three opponents.

“I look forward to the legislative interim at hand, particularly my work as Chair of the Senate Subcommittees on Higher Education and on Higher Education Finance,” Senator Zaffirini said. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Senate Finance Committee and as a member of the Senate committees on Health and Human Services and on Administration.

First elected from a field of four Democrats and two Republicans in 1986, Senator Zaffirini is second in seniority and the first Hispanic woman elected to the 31-member Texas Senate. She has passed 581 bills and cast 38,530 consecutive votes since January, 1987.
