Just a Thought: Latin American Heritage Society in La Prensa, 12-17

Just a Thought: Latin American Heritage Society
By Steve Walker

Last Sunday I was honored to cover the 2018 Latin American Heritage Society Crowning and Coronation Church Service at Mission Concepion on Mission Road. Overseeing the ceremony along with Sunday mass, Father David Garcia presided.

This year’s King and Queen are King VI Evangelist Minister and Television Personality Jimmy Robles, and Queen, Actress and Television Personality and staring in the Divas of Texas, Brandy Lopez.

Last year I covered the ceremony with King V Roman Garcia, a comedian and personality on Great Day SA on Kens 5 and Publisher of La Prensa San Antonio, Nina Duran. She is my boss overseeing my weekly Sunday column including this one!

The annual event is free and open to the public. Last Sunday it was standing room only with a young Mariachi band playing during the service.

Anthony Tobias the Executive Director of the Latin American Heritage Society says, “The primary mission of the Latin American Heritage Society is to promote Hispanic/Latin men and women in a positive light and to empower them to become valuable members of our society.”

According to Tobias, “The second mission of the Latin American Heritage Society member is to encourage young men and women to stay in school and graduate from high school and continue onto a higher level of education.”

He goes on to share that the third mission of Latin American Heritage Society is to “encourage and to promote the development of music and the fine arts in young women by raising money for scholarships in music and the fine arts, so that these young women can attend one of San Antonio’s great colleges or universities and seek a career in these areas.”

Tobias says in order for one to be nominated to be king or queen of the Latin American Heritage Society, they must meet a long list of qualifications. Once crowned, there are multiple events, duties and obligations that must be carried out.

The King and Queen throughout their reign will visit children in the hospital, wounded warriors, sick patients being treated for multiple complications from various diseases. The LHS promotes the idea that by caring, they make a difference, in the lives of those who need it most.

The city of San Antonio can expect to see King Jimmy and Queen Brandy around town at multiple events throughout the coming months. From the Veteran’s Parade to heavy involvement with Fiesta 2018, the king and queen will remain busy doing what they do best.

As a side note, while I never met Preacher Jimmy and only heard of the great things he has done, I am blessed to have known Brandy Lopez for some years. She is a remarkable woman.

And as always, I write just a thought.
