Memorial Day in San Antonio remembered by Vets/families, 5-25

This afternoon at 3 p.m. Veterans and families took a moment of silence to honor the men and women in our armed forces who died in the service of the United States of America.

For the past 15 years Americans have paused for one minute to reflect on the sacrifices that secured our freedoms. This remembrance is a unifying commemoration of our country's history and our brave men and women in uniform.
While Memorial Day has been observed in some form since 1868, starting as a day set aside to decorate the graves of Civil War dead, its observance has not always united our country.

Almost 150 years later, I am heartened that for most of us this is a day to enjoy family and friendship and to mark with gratitude and respect those who made the ultimate sacrifice to guarantee our freedoms.

God bless America, and thank you to all who fought to preserve her.

Sincerely,
Ivy. R Taylor, SA Mayor
