At this weekend's annual conference for the Association of Alternative Newsmedia in Nashville, the winners of the 2014 AAN awards were announced and SA Association of Hispanic Journalists Vice President, Jessica Elizarraras, won first-place in the Food Writing category for her work in the San Antonio Current. She was one of two from the Current to win an award from AAN this year, alongside former staff writer Mike Barajas.
Jessica is food and nightlife editor at the Current and previously wrote for the San Antonio Express-News, where I got to know her great work. Here's her award-winning piece: http://sacurrent.com/dining/food/on-the-line-finding-female-chefs-in-san-antonio-1.1532127

Congrats to Jessica, who thankfully is also returning to the SAAHJ board next year, and we are happy for her bringing in alternative media representation to our organization's leadership. She also has diligently chaired our scholarship committee this year and been active in SAAHJ since getting her career started.
Cheers to one of our own.
-Francisco Vara-Orta
SAAHJ President
