Former Rey Feo & Businessman Larry Benson passes, 10-28

L-R: Former Rey Feo Larry Benson (68) has passed away. More details
forthcoming.

New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans owner Tom Benson released a statement Monday after the death of his younger brother Larry. Larry Benson was the majority owner of the San Antonio Riders of the World League of American Football from 1991-92. He was also in the car dealership business in San Antonio.

“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart to learn about the passing of my brother, Larry,” Benson said in the statement. “He was not only a brother but a friend. We shared the excitement and thrill of owning sports franchises, automobile dealerships and other similar businesses both together and separately. This was very unique to me and something I cherished greatly.

Larry’s passion for business and sports was tremendous, but it was his passion for life, helping those in need and friends that will define my brother. He loved to travel and share those experiences with his family and friends.

He loved the thrill and excitement of Saints game day and the tip off of an NBA game, especially his San Antonio Spurs. One of Larry’s proudest moments was serving as the 65th El Rey Feo this past April, which in San Antonio is a very distinguished honor. El Rey Feo is responsible for raising millions of dollars for local students to continue their education.

He will be greatly missed by both his immediate family, his son Larry, his extended family in San Antonio and New Orleans, his friends and the people that he worked with.”
