1968 CBS Documentary Rekindles Concern for Hunger in San Antonio
A West Side San Antonio organization is screening the 1968 CBS documentary, “Hunger in America ,” to draw attention to the causes of hunger in San Antonio. The film will be shown Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Guadalupe Theater, 1301 Guadalupe Street. Discussion of the film and the West Side neighborhood it features will follow.
Inner City Development, sponsor of the event, was once Inner City Apostolate in the near West Side neighborhood at the time the film was made. Fr. Ralph Ruiz, who was interviewed in the film, returns for the screening.
Patti and Rod Radle are co-directors of Inner City Development. They moved into the neighborhood in 1969 as volunteers at Inner City Apostolate. They plan follow-up meetings of those interested in becoming active in addressing the root causes of hunger in San Antonio.
The controversial film opens with a malnourished newborn dying in San Antonio's Robert B. Green Hospital. The film concentrates on four areas of the country and four different racial and ethnic groups.
Some who lived in the neighborhood and worked for Inner City at the time the film was made will be returning to reflect on what has changed and what had remained the same in the neighborhood.
The event will examine statistics on hunger and health from San Antonio MetroHealth and attempt to identify the causes of hunger.
Inner City has invited other organizations to partner with it in follow-up meetings addressing the complex relationship between hunger and other conditions.
For more information on the screening event, contact Inner City Development at 224-7239.
