Randolph AFB offers maximum Fourth twang courtesy of Two Tons of Steel at its event, which begins at 5 p.m. Monday and includes games, crafts and activities for children. Admission is free, The general public is asked to enter through the West and South gates; the usual security precautions will be in effect.
Lackland AFB's Star-Spangled Festival on Monday also spotlights a San Antonio band — the long-running Tejano group Liberty Band — at 7 p.m., followed by The Pictures Band from Austin at 8:20 at the base amphitheater. A hip-hop tent, a paintball challenge, a rock-climbing wall, an arts and crafts fair and a children's carnival will be offered, plus lots of food and beverage booths. Market Square is billing its four-day bash as its biggest Fourth celebration ever, and it certainly looks that way. El Mercado is packing in wall-to-wall music from the '50s, '60s and '70s on two stages, along with dancing, hula-hoop and poodle-skirt contests, a classic-car show, arts and crafts and a children's area. The patriotic portion of the event begins at noon Monday and includes a keynote address from retired Lt. Gen Ricardo Sanchez. Hours are 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Sunday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday.
