40 years ago, tomorrow, March 26th, I returned from Phu Bai Vietnam after serving a year with the 148th Supply & Service Company as the unit mail clerk at Camp Hocmuth to include delivering the "Dear John" letters. We supplied material to build 8 man hootches for our troops, mess halls, unit compounds etc. We also manned a graves registration unit (body bags) and supplied all the food for our quadrant in the I Corps of the country.
Down the street, Camp Eagle, the 101st Airborne Division Base Camp was the home to thousands of Airborne soldiers. One of those soldiers stationed there at the same time was my friend, local attorney and Veteran Democratic activist Charlie Urbina Jones, a forward observer. He served as an Army Officer (2Lt.) while I was an enlisted man. (E-4)
A lot has happened in our country since then. Troops pulling multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, now the possiblity in Libya, Watergate, the assassination attempts of Presidents Gerald Ford & Ronald Reagan, and the list goes on.
What is worse two out of five veterans including Viet Nam Veterans are roaming the streets and homeless. We have really come a long way since I returned.
And to my four fellow Judges in Bexar County who also served in Vietnam, Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Bill Donovan (medic) Justice of the Peace Pct. 3 Keith Baker (hospital administrator) Probate Judge Tom Rickhoff (Army JAG Officer) & County Court Judge #13 Bill White (Pilot) thank you for your service.
A Thank You to all those who have served as well. May we never forget.
