Council Candidate Leticia Cantu testifies before State House

Candidate for San Antonio City Council District 4, Leticia Cantu, testified before the Texas House of Representatives Transportation Committee on proposed statewide legislation which would ban text messaging while driving.

While she served as interim District 4 Councilwoman in 2010, Cantu authored and introduced a similar citywide ban. Jim Jones, of the San Antonio Police Department, testified as to the importance of the ban in raising public awareness of the dangers of messaging while driving.

Since the ordinance took effect in January 2011, Jones said numerous citations had already been issued. Cantu related her personal near collision with a distracted, text messaging driver, and closed by saying “policy makers can’t solve everything, but when it comes to public safety, this law will save lives.”
