State Rep. Mike Villarreal Reappointed to Key Budget and Revenue Committees
Will Focus on Funding Education Now and in the Future
Austin - Today Texas House Speaker Joe Straus named Rep. Mike Villarreal to the Appropriations Committee, the Ways and Means Committee, and the Redistricting Committee. He will serve as Vice Chair of the Redistricting Committee. Rep. Villarreal is the senior Democrat on Ways and Means and the only Democrat appointed to both Ways and Means and Appropriations.
"I appreciate Speaker Straus providing me with this opportunity," said Rep. Villarreal. "My top priority will be fully funding education for our children and health services for kids, seniors and the disabled now and into the future, which will require eliminating the permanent deficit created in 2006."
The Appropriations Committee is tasked with writing the state budget while the Ways and Means Committee is in charge of taxation and other revenue generation. The Redistricting Committee will attempt to draw new congressional and legislative districts using the new population data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.
