Fifteen local college students will vie for one of the oldest Fiesta royalty crowns Feb. 13th at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, 226 North St. Mary's St. And they'd like you to watch them and cheer them on.

One young woman will go home that evening wearing the tiara of Miss Fiesta San Antonio, and two others will make up her court of First and Second Princesses.

The 61st annual pageant starts at 7 p.m. To join Fiesta royalty, local dignitaries, families and friends as they applaud the students, buy your tickets now for just $20 each from the Majestic Theatre box office or through TicketMaster.

The contestants have been preparing for the pageant since November, said Lindsey Musch, pageant president-and Miss Fiesta for 2004. They have been learning the opening dance number, shopping for gowns at Macy's Department Store and learning makeup and hairstyle tricks. A representative from Capital One Bank, a pageant sponsor, talked with the girls about financial management. And each contestant has been researching, writing and rehearsing a two-minute skit about a woman from United States history. They'll present the skits, and be judged on them, at the pageant.

The girls will also be judged on how they do in interviews a few days before the pageant and their poise as they walk across the stage wearing their gowns.

Every contestant will receive a scholarship, with larger awards going to the queen and her court, Musch said.

Miss Fiesta and her court will attend dozens of events during Fiesta in April. They'll also visit local schools with representatives from AT&T, the official Fiesta telecommunications company, to encourage students to continue their educations.
