Albert McKnight, (photo) the first African American to serve as a municipal judge and justice of the peace, died Wednesday of complications from a heart attack.
He had made headlines over the years, most recently for his pro bono work last year to prevent the city from demolishing the East Side house of eccentric artist Seymour Perkins.
He served as a San Antonio municipal judge in 1980-81, and as Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace from 1996 until 2006.
