Educators endorse Dr. Michael Soto for SAISD Board Member

Dr. Michael Soto, SAISD parent and lifelong educator, has earned the support of a broad spectrum of San Antonio educators, neighborhood advocates, and community and business leaders.

Soto was endorsed last month by the San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel and by the San Antonio Central Labor Council.

Soto raised a total of $18,690 during the January to April 2009 reporting period; his average contribution stood at $203. According to Soto, his supporters understand that the SAISD school board needs an experienced teacher and scholar with solid educational credentials, someone who knows what public school students need to succeed at the highest levels. Because he believes in open and honest governance, Soto will be posting his finance reports to his campaign website:
www.michael-soto.org.

Soto stated, “I am humbled by the overwhelming show of support from folks who clearly care about improving our schools. I plan on winning this election to be the voice of parents and taxpayers on the school board as our school district and our city move forward in the twenty-first century.”

Soto’s campaign reflects the type of vision and agenda needed to prepare for the opportunities and challenges facing San Antonio and SAISD. The children-oriented Soto yard signs are a reminder of what the school board race is about: San Antonio’s future.

“I have spent my entire life in educational institutions preparing for this calling. This election is not about me or my opponent; it’s about the future of our public school children. Our educational system must change to prepare our children for a very competitive environment,” remarked Soto.

Soto is a graduate of Stanford University where he earned a B.A. with honors in Modern Thought & Literature; he is also a graduate of Harvard University where he received a Ph.D. in English & American Literature & Language. He currently serves as associate professor of English and director of the McNair Scholars Program at Trinity University. He is married to Celina Peña and has one child, Alejo, a kindergartner at Hawthorne Academy, an SAISD school.

SAISD is the third largest school district in San Antonio. The school board election is May 9th.
