Celeste Guzman Mendoza
Poetry Reading
Celeste Guzman Mendoza with Frances Santos
@ Bihl Haus Arts
Saturday, April 4th, 2-4 p.m.
Poet and playwright Celeste Guzman Mendoza will read at Bihl Haus Arts on Saturday, April 4th from 2-4 p.m. from Beneath the Halo. This unpublished collection of poems explores Tejananess, that state of mind any Texas-born-and-bred Mexican American woman can understand.
These poems are about the people and places all Tejanas can recognize, the Catholic saints and virgins that revolve around our bedrooms, abuse and survival, and the magic and mayhem of marriage. Her poetry is noted for its brilliant wit, “deft imagery, keen observation, and stunning terms of phrase.”
She will be joined by Frances Santos, author of Cayetana (Wings Press), called “poetry that hides behind no veils and keeps to no code” by author Lorna Dee Cervantes.
This passionate collection of family poems . . . is a wonder-filled testimonio to the power of reaching beyond imagined limitations.” Guzman Mendoza’s poetry has appeared in various journals and anthologies.
She co-founded “Women of Ill Repute: Refute!” a women’s performance group, of which Santos was a member, that deconstructed issues of culture and identity.
This San Antonio Poetry Month reading is free and open to the public. Both poets will bring copies of recent books for sale and signing.
