Americans for Prosperity Scores the Texas Speaker’s Race

Americans for Prosperity – Texas has compiled a scorecard of the 11 State Representatives who remain in the race for Texas House Speaker.

On Saturday, Rep. Tom Craddick (R-Midland) exited the race after realizing he would not get the support he needed for a fourth term as Speaker. Now Rep. Joe Straus (R-San Antonio) claims to have 98 members of the 150-member Texas legislature supporting his run for Speaker.

Anything can happen between now and Jan. 13, when the 81st Legislative Session begins, so AFP put together a record of each of the remaining candidates’ voting records for the previous two legislative sessions. AFP tallied votes on key issues regarding taxation and limited government, and then scored the candidates on whether they supported or opposed AFP’s positions on those issues.

“We appreciate the work Rep. Joe Straus has done sponsoring the elimination of the TIF (telecommunications) tax and his rating is an “A” for AFP, but we are not endorsing anyone,” said State Director Peggy Venable. “We want voters to know how the candidates voted on our issues. Moreover, we think it is important that the next speaker understand the significance of making committee appointments that will benefit Texans and continue the prosperous trend of limited government and low taxes that we’ve seen in the state.”
