For months the needs of the African American community have been neglected by the local media.
When KSJL went off the air the community lost an important element in addressing the communications needs of not only the African American community but the entire community as a whole.
With this in mind San Antonio Community Radio, Inc. is hosting a Town Hall Meeting to announce to the community the progress that has been made so far to deal with the loss of KSJL. On October 4th, at the Martin Luther King Academy, beginning at noon, San Antonio Community Radio will provide an update on the current efforts to secure a community radio station that will not only address the communications of the African American community but also the needs of the entire community.
Jazz artists who have been unable to get their music played on the mainstream stations will have an opportunity to showcase their music on a station that will help to develop local talent. San Antonio Community Radio has adopted the call letters KROV-FM and will bring about a revolution in radio in the San Antonio area. KROV will air positive RAP, Jazz, Soul, Rhythm and Blues, and music across a culture which has been ignored by the mainstream media outlets.
Additionally, KROV will provide educational programming in cooperation with colleges, universities, and public schools to address the educational needs of our community. Talk shows will be available that make honest attempts to address the social concerns of our day. San Antonio Community Radio was developed out of efforts by Gayle Sledge and the “Restore Our Voice (hence KROV)” organization that sought a non-profit radio station as the solution to the needs of the community.
Initially, several other groups had sought to replace KSJL with another profit making entity, but this approach is thought to be unworkable as far as being able to sustain a radio station that has a black format in this market.
Black and community radio needs to be an institution. There are several social problems that confront all communities, and KROV hopes to address these as well through community based talk shows and educational programming.
The Town Hall Meeting is the second in a series for San Antonio Community Radio. The first one was held at the Frank Garrett Center on the Westside a year ago. This next Town Hall meeting will be held on the Eastside in sticking to the desire to involve the entire community. The next Town Hall Meeting after the October 4th event will be planned in either the southern sector or northern sector of the city. KROV will have to raise money in order for this effort to be a success.

It will cost money to run a radio station and will require an army of volunteers and supporters. KROV will be providing volunteer applications and refreshments on October 4th as it prepares to enter the next phase of restoring our voice. The public is invited to hear the details of this important announcement.
